“We Should All Be Feminists”

Our new Book Club, EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB - We Should All Be Feminists,  is born out of a need to deconstruct and examine some of the core ideas that should make up the broader movement of feminism - or rather, feminisms. We plan to invite a different feminist author to engage in conversation to discuss their work and its themes to gain a deeper understanding of feminist issues today. Following this initial conversation, attendees will have the chance to interact, participate, and ask any burning questions.

WHAT

WHY

We are currently witnessing a disturbing rise in intolerant anti-gender and right-wing populist movements, which are underpinned by the so-called ‘crisis in masculinity’. This is coinciding with the growth of false and nefarious narratives that are pulling gender issues ‘backwards’ and escalating gender-based threats, undermining established democracies in many European nations.

In trying to understand these inter-related “crises”, on 7th July 2022, we organised an online conversation entitled “Feminism or Fascism? The crisis of masculinity & democracy” - as part of our interfaith dialogue series Together for Reflection & Connection At the event, we explored the definitions of feminism(s), the concept of white feminism, de-colonised feminism, the interrelated “crises” of masculinity and democracy, and so much more with leading feminist writers Rafia Zakaria and Laurie Penny. “Feminism isn’t something you are, it is something you do”, Laurie advised.

There was so much to unpack and discuss further that we wished we had more time. For our closing question, we asked the speakers what could be done to bring about real social change. “We have to go to the furthest roots', advised Nyanchama, a decolonial anti-racist expert and one of ENORB’s (and ENAR’s) Board Members. And so, we have decided to do just that …

Nyanchama

    • Different types of feminisms

    • Intersectionality as methodology, lense, and posture

    • What does "decolonisation" mean, and how can it be done?

    • Gender-Based Violence: how to define and address it

    • LGBTQIA+ issues

    • Gender & environment issues

    • The gendered division of labour; ‘productive’ and ‘reproductive’ work

This project is an online tool to combat discrimination and promote progressive and anti-racist narratives through conversations, increased connections and proactive empowering participation. We are planning five-six events per year, 1h30 each. An hour will be dedicated for conversation between host and author, while the last 30 minutes for Q&A from the public.

PAST EVENTS

  • EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB "We All Should Be Feminist" - In Conversation with Alex Iantaffi

On 18th July, we hosted Alex Iantaffi, author, therapist, and academic who has researched and published extensively on gender, disability, sexuality, and relationship issues.

This conversation focused on their co-authored book "Life Isn’t Binary", written with Meg-John Barker. Challenging our rigidly binary knowledge and societal structures, the author explored how non-binary methods can be used to generate new ways of understanding the complexity of human experience.

  • EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB "We Should All Be Feminist" - In Conversation with Ruby Hamad

This time, we had a conversation with Ruby Hamad, journalist, author and academic completing a Ph.D. in media studies at UNSW (Australia).

During the event, we focused on Ruby’s best-selling debut book WHITE TEARS/BROWN SCARS, which traces the role that White Womanhood and feminism have played in the development of Western power structures. The non-fiction book was inspired by her viral 2018 essay 'How White Women Use Strategic Tears to Silence Women of Colour', which became a global flashpoint for discussions of race and gender.

  • EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB "We Should All Be Feminist" - In Conversation with Kristina Millona

On 3rd July 2023, ENORB hosted the fourth event of its EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB, “We Should All Be Feminist”.

This time we have been in conversation with Kristina Millona (she/her), an Albanian scholar working on topics around sexualities, communism, and archives.

We explored the interlocking ideologies of gendered racism, border securitization, and the “War on Drugs” surrounding Albanian immigration in the English Channel, and Kristina provided a solid grounding of the reasons why Albanians were the latest scapegoat in British immigration politics.

  • EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB "We Should All Be Feminist" - In Conversation with Mariz Tadros"

On 27th April 2023, ENORB hosted the third event of its EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB, “We Should All Be Feminist” (titled after Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book).

We had an insightful conversation with Mariz Tadros, Professor of Politics and Development at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) with a specialisation in politics and human development of the Middle East.

This conversation focused on Mariz's recent piece, 'Taking a Stance on Feminists’ Prejudice Against Religious Minority Women’.

In this event, Mariz interrogated the complexity of the intersection between gender issues and religion to imagine a more inclusive future.

  • EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB "We Should AllBe Feminist" - In Conversation with Tatiana Buelvas Baldiris

On 2nd March 2023, ENORB hosted the second event of its EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB, “We Should All Be Feminist”.

We had an insightful conversation with Tatiana Buelvas Baldiris, an international consultant and social impact leader.

This conversation focused on Tatiana’s recent piece, ‘Gender diversity in STEAM: challenges and possibilities in leadership for trans workers in Latin America.’

Tatiana outlined the complex barriers facing trans people when entering the workforce in Latin America, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) areas. Writing from the perspective of ci-trans alliances, her piece explores how the private sector, civil society organisations and academia can facilitate labour inclusion and leadership.

  • EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB "We Should All Be Feminist" - In Conversation with Silvia Semenzin

On 15th December 2022, the first event of our brand new Book Club "We Should All Be Feminist" took place.

We had an insightful conversation with digital rights expert Silvia Semenzin on what role digital platforms play in facilitating online non-consensual sharing of intimate images (NCII).

In this webinar, Silvia presented the main themes of her latest co-authored book, Donne tutte puttane: Revenge porn e maschilità egemone (Women all whores: Revenge porn and hegemonic masculinity, 2021); an in depth exploration of the non-consensual dissemination of sexual images.
